Wool keeps the body warm in winter, but it also keeps the body cool during the hot season. Because of this incredible characteristic, merino wool is also used to make summer suits. Merino is used for various textiles and clothing items, for example, that is extremely popular with sportswear manufacturers. No doubt, knitters will enjoy the contact with merino during the process, because it is t is incredibly soft and pleasant to touch.

  • Alpaca wool

Alpaca wool is known as one of the finest wools in the world. It is soft, silky, warm, luxurious, lightweight, durable and hypoallergenic.  Alpaca wool has a palette of 22 natural colors and is naturally available in a wide variety of colors, ranging from white to black with various shades of greys and browns. • Acrylic wool

The properties of Acrylic yarn are very similar to cotton and wool. Both knitters and manufacturers often choose acrylic if they want to create hard-wearing clothes and accessories. Acrylic will keep the knit in shape and color and will make it more durable. As Acrylic is a man-made material, it’s much longer-lasting than natural fibers and will stand the test of time. It can be machine washed up to +40 ° C and dried in an automatic tumble dryer.

  • Mohair wool

This natural fiber is characterized by unique lustre, sheen and a fine texture. Mohair is one of the most exclusive fibers, some even call it the “diamond fiber”. Both durable and resilient, mohair is used for knitting luxurious suits, as well as it is suitable for knitting fine lace, shawls and socks due to its warming effect. This yarn is delicate, super-soft and silky. To make the yarn more durable, it is twisted with natural and synthetic fibers, such as silk or polyamide. Mohair is painted in a variety of shades. The choice of knitting material is always a very important issue for everyone who loves to knit. Because, almost everything depends on the right choice of the yarn: beauty, quality, and durability of the product. Let’s look at a few criteria that you need to pay attention to, in order not to make a mistake when choosing yarn.

 Hand knitting yarns

There are existing hundreds of yarn colors and textures. But, how to choose the good yarn for hand knitting, from which yarn is better to make a warm hat and a soft sweater? Does the knitting tool – knitting needles or a hook-affect the yarn choice? Mostly no, it does not matter. The yarn labels indicate the optimal size of both the hook and the knitting needles. When buying yarn – both for knitting needles and a hook-you should pay attention not only to the weight of the skein but also to the length of its floss.

The material for knitting needles or crochet hooks knitting can be very diverse: wool, cotton, silk, viscose, synthetic and mixed threads. The most common types of yarn are made of natural or synthetic fibers. Natural fibers are of animal and vegetable origins. Wool, mohair, Alpaca, cashmere, and silk are all made from animal fibers, while cotton, viscose, and linen are made from vegetable fibers. Synthetic fibers, such as polyester and acrylic, are very popular in combination, for example, a mix of mohair and nylon. Most of the winter garments are made with a mixed yarn containing different proportions of natural wool and acrylic. This combination mitigates the disadvantages of both materials at the same time reinforcing their positive qualities.

When choosing yarn, first of all, you should look at how tightly it is twisted. The tightly twisted yarn will be more suitable for crochet hook knitting. If you knit with needles, the canvas of the garment can turn out not only rigid but also skewed. In the process of yarn choosing, you should check how strong and elastic the yarn is. Also, when choosing a yarn, it is necessary to know its approximate weight in grams. Yarn weight can tell you a lot of important information, such as the gauge of the yarn. Such information allows you to make yarn substitutions when you can’t afford or find the needed type of yarn.  Also, you should take into account the thickness and quality of the floss. From thick yarn, dense garments can be made. Therefore, such garments need more material.

Before you are going to buy all the yarn you liked, you need to think about what garments and for whom you are going to knit.

  • Knitted baby garments. Soft hypoallergenic material that is also well breathable, such as yarn containing Merino wool, Alpaca or bamboo fibers, is suitable for children’s knitting. The choice of yarn for knitting children’s garments is a responsible matter because the baby’s skin is more sensitive compared to adults. Therefore, for children garments, it is better to choose a special yarn, on which manufacturers put a mark “children’s”. Often it is packaged in skeins of 50 grams. This is convenient because children’s garments take less material than adults. The range of children garments for winter is dominated by soft hypoallergenic acrylic and yarns with the addition of Merino wool. Also, it is not difficult to find a variety of mohair yarn specifically for kids.
  • Knitted adult garments. There are also certain requirements for adult knitted garments too: the yarn should not shrink when washing, fade in the sun, cause irritation or allergies. It is easier to choose the yarn, depending on the type of product you are going to knit. For a scarf, sweater, hat and other autumn-winter garments, the main qualities of the yarn should be softness and thermal conductivity. Mostly the main choice for knitting such products is to choose natural wool. If you need to choose a yarn for a hat, then one of the fluffiest yarns is mohair. Its thin fibers like are like a soft cloud, which covers the knitted garment and not missing the cold.
  • Knitted summer garments. For knitting summer garments, it is better to choose durable elastic materials that have hygroscopicity, resistance to burnout, and are breathable. The information on how many yarns are needed usually is written in knitting instructions. For example, to knit a female pullover you will need 450-700 g of average thickness wool yarn.

Machine knitting yarns

If for manual knitting it is more convenient to use yarn in skeins, then for machine knitting yarn bobbin is an ideal option. Yarn bobbins, which are sold in specialized stores for machine knitting, differ from the yarn in skeins, which are used for hand knitting. When you try to use yarn in skeins for machine knitting, garments will be uneven, its parts may not converge in size, and the final product will be deformed.

The length of the floss on yarn bobbin can reach 800-1000 meters or more.  Buying yarn bobbins is profitable. After all, from one bobbin weighing 1300 gr, you can knit two or three garments. But you will need to use a special machine for rewinding the yarn.

By using yarn bobbins you will reduce the load of the machine. Yarn bobbins, the same as the yarn for hand knitting can be different: wool, blends of wool and cotton or synthetic and artificial fibers. All machines are very sensitive to the quality of the thread and its tension.

Yarn for knitting machines – is the most important factor of its flawless and durable operation. You should always carefully select and prepare the yarn for knitting, and then the process of machine knitting will be easy and enjoyable.

The yarn length/thickness

It is very important to pay attention to the product label when buying yarn. You will find almost all the necessary indicators in it: the thickness of the thread, its length in the skein, and the size of the knitting needles you should use. It is recommended to keep the label, if in the knitting process you will run out of yarn, it will be easier for you to pick up the same.

That is possible to combine the yarn not only of the same color and variety. Thread for knitting can be composed of several different colors and different thicknesses threads. Such a colorful material will be excellent for knitting warm socks, mittens, pullovers, etc. It does not require special design and is very practical to wear.
